Where to sail in Italy

Three Italian areas matter for charter: Sardinia with bases in Olbia and Portisco (the La Maddalena archipelago, the Costa Smeralda and, if you like, Bonifacio on Corsica), Sicily with the Aeolian Islands, and the Bay of Naples with Amalfi and Capri. La Maddalena is a national park: mooring buoys are paid, but the water is lagoon-clear. Sardinian wind is the mistral plus an afternoon breeze — it can be fresh in summer. High-season marinas are expensive, so in Sardinia you anchor out. Season May to October; June and September give the best balance of weather and price.

Questions

Questions about yacht charter in Italy

All questions and answers

How much does a week on a yacht cost in Italy?

As of 28 Oct 2026, a discounted week in Italy starts from €780 for the whole boat; half of the models are at least 31% off. Transit log, cleaning and the refundable deposit are paid at the base on top.

Which month is cheapest for a yacht charter in Italy?

By the agent's latest checks (monohulls), the cheapest month is November: a median of ≈€254 per berth per week. The most expensive is January, at ≈€280. The most boats with 20% off or more are in November: 52%. The agent checks the current month and the next five; each month has its own page with the numbers.

Which is cheaper in Italy: a catamaran or a sailing yacht?

Per berth per week in October: monohull median €260, catamaran €425. A week on a catamaran usually costs more, but it has more cabins and berths, so the price per berth is the fairer comparison. Discounted right now — catamarans: 106, monohulls: 142.

When is the best time to charter a yacht in Italy?

Italy's season runs May to October. June and September give the best balance of weather and price; July and August are the peak, with expensive, busy marinas, which is why in Sardinia you anchor out. May and October are the shoulder months: cooler water, cheaper boats.

Can I charter a yacht in Italy with a skipper or crew?

Yes. Almost every boat in the selection can be taken with a hired skipper, and a cook or hostess can be added on request. The crew is paid by the day on top of the boat price, and their food on board is on you. Without a skipper's licence and a VHF certificate, a skipper is mandatory. The RYC manager books the crew together with the boat.

Which one-week route should I pick in Italy?

One-week routes in Italy, planned day by day: “Olbia — La Maddalena”, 7 days, about 100 nautical miles; “Portisco — Bonifacio”, 8 days, about 95 nautical miles; “Punta Ala — Macinaggio”, 7 days, about 155 nautical miles; “Naples — Capri”, 8 days, about 110 nautical miles; “Palermo — Stromboli”, 9 days, about 295 nautical miles; “Salerno — Amalfi”, 7 days, about 85 nautical miles. Each route page has the legs, miles and overnight stops.

How far ahead should I book?

In the Mediterranean (Turkey, Greece, Croatia), you can catch hot deals 2–6 weeks ahead. For the Caribbean, the Seychelles and other exotic destinations, book early, 4–8 months ahead: fleets there are smaller and last-minute discounts almost never come up.

What's included in the boat price?

Just the boat, for a week. Usually paid separately: transit log and final cleaning, fuel, marina fees, the security deposit (or deposit insurance), a skipper, cook and hostess if you need them, and extras (SUP board, on-board Wi-Fi, coffee machine, child safety netting).

Do I need a licence to charter a yacht?

For a bareboat charter (no skipper or crew provided), yes: a skipper's licence and, as a rule, a VHF radio certificate. Without a licence, we add a skipper, paid separately from the boat price.

Why do all charters run Saturday to Saturday?

99% of charter fleets worldwide work this way: the boat comes back on Friday evening and goes out to the next crew on Saturday morning. Other changeover days are possible in low season, by arrangement. In some destinations (the Caribbean, Cuba, France) you can add days beyond the week: +1, 2, 3 or 4 days.

What is the security deposit and how is it paid?

The security deposit is your insurance excess in case of damage, usually €1,000–8,000. It is taken at the base at check-in on a credit card issued outside Russia: charter companies don't accept Russian cards or debit cards. With a hired skipper the deposit terms may be different, and not every charter company accepts a cash deposit or deposit insurance: check with the manager.

Where the numbers come from and how to cite them

The RYC search agent checks the charter company portals MMK and NauSys and open booking sites about every 6 days; each boat is counted once per week, at the source price with no markup. You may cite the figures on this page with a link to it; every month and country is in the CSV and on the Prices page.
