Where to sail in the Canary Islands
The Canaries are an ocean cruising ground with a year-round season: bases on Tenerife and Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote with neighbouring Fuerteventura. Legs between islands are longer than in the Mediterranean (20–50 miles) and cross the open Atlantic with a swell, so the area suits experienced crews better. The north-easterly trade wind blows 15–25 knots and accelerates between the islands. Warm water and settled winter weather make the Canaries Europe's main winter sailing area; nights are spent in marinas, as sheltered anchorages are few.

When is the best time to charter a yacht in the Canary Islands?
The Canaries are sailed all year round. October to April is the main season: the Mediterranean is cold, while here it is warm and the weather settled. In summer the trade wind is stronger and accelerates to 25 knots and more between the islands, which suits experienced crews.
Can I charter a yacht in the Canary Islands with a skipper or crew?
Yes. Almost every boat in the selection can be taken with a hired skipper, and a cook or hostess can be added on request. The crew is paid by the day on top of the boat price, and their food on board is on you. Without a skipper's licence and a VHF certificate, a skipper is mandatory. The RYC manager books the crew together with the boat.
Which one-week route should I pick in the Canary Islands?
One-week routes in the Canary Islands, planned day by day: “Tenerife — La Gomera”, 7 days, about 120 nautical miles; “Lanzarote — Fuerteventura”, 7 days, about 100 nautical miles. Each route page has the legs, miles and overnight stops.
How far ahead should I book?
In the Mediterranean (Turkey, Greece, Croatia), you can catch hot deals 2–6 weeks ahead. For the Caribbean, the Seychelles and other exotic destinations, book early, 4–8 months ahead: fleets there are smaller and last-minute discounts almost never come up.
What's included in the boat price?
Just the boat, for a week. Usually paid separately: transit log and final cleaning, fuel, marina fees, the security deposit (or deposit insurance), a skipper, cook and hostess if you need them, and extras (SUP board, on-board Wi-Fi, coffee machine, child safety netting).
Do I need a licence to charter a yacht?
For a bareboat charter (no skipper or crew provided), yes: a skipper's licence and, as a rule, a VHF radio certificate. Without a licence, we add a skipper, paid separately from the boat price.
Why do all charters run Saturday to Saturday?
99% of charter fleets worldwide work this way: the boat comes back on Friday evening and goes out to the next crew on Saturday morning. Other changeover days are possible in low season, by arrangement. In some destinations (the Caribbean, Cuba, France) you can add days beyond the week: +1, 2, 3 or 4 days.
What is the security deposit and how is it paid?
The security deposit is your insurance excess in case of damage, usually €1,000–8,000. It is taken at the base at check-in on a credit card issued outside Russia: charter companies don't accept Russian cards or debit cards. With a hired skipper the deposit terms may be different, and not every charter company accepts a cash deposit or deposit insurance: check with the manager.

Where the numbers come from and how to cite them
The RYC search agent checks the charter company portals MMK and NauSys and open booking sites about every 6 days; each boat is counted once per week, at the source price with no markup. You may cite the figures on this page with a link to it; every month and country is in the CSV and on the Prices page.
